--ESSAY—
When I first looked at my topic I was not very sure on how easy it would be to locate the things I needed for it. My topic is one that was challenging and at the same time interesting. My topic was ‘The plastic revolution’ and right when I saw it I knew I was up for a challenge that would test my skills in the class. I began by thinking to myself about all of the different aspects that could be associated with the topic so I had a bit of an idea as to where to go. I felt that this was a good starting point as at first I was a little unsure of where I was going to take it. Now, one thing that is important to know about my situation is that I have a vague understanding of what the ‘plastics revolution’ is so I decided to do a little online research (various websites from google) to get a better idea and perspective. After I did these key things, laying the foundation for my search I began to research the topic with the different things listed on our final exam. I started with the world wide web because (again) I wanted to get more of a broad perspective on the topic. I found plenty of different sites with good information on the history and background of the topic. Next I decided to use the catalog because I wanted to see what books the library had in stock that were about or in some way refered to my topic, one that is quite frankily, specific and odd. I found that there were a few books that the library had regarding it and many that were a bit related or associated with the topic. Next I looked on academic search premier and found once again, a few things that were related to the topic. It was helpful to see some more sources/info available. Finally I looked in a specific search database, I looked in ISI web of knoweledge –Science. I found some articles (listed above) that were near dead on and ofcourse others that did not really relate, and then some that related a little. I was a motivated researcher during this process because I really wanted to see what I could do and also if I could find any decent information on my topic. I didn’t really have any issues with my citations they were fairly straight forward and all the information was basically given to me. I evaluate my search as overall fairly well, I found everything that I was looking for and then some. I did have to revise it a couple times because there were some searches I conducted where nothing decent really came up. But, as said with a few revisions and other attempts it ended up working out just fine! Two questions that I would ask would be:
1) What is the overall impact of the plastic revolution on the world and is it good or bad?
2) Where is the situation with plastics (or Plastic revolution) going to be going in the future?
Finally to additional databases I would use would be CQ researcher and Lexis-nexus. I think that these two would at least be worth a try to see what (or if) I could come up with anything extra.
Overall this final really showed me where I am and where this class has brought me. I am impressed with my progress!

Self Assessment Essay
Before I even begin to go down the syllabus and course objectives I must say that flat out I am clearly a lot more information literate then I was when I first started the course. Now, unlike before I will have the confidence when I go to research something, and even if I do get stuck I now know what to do. For 'recognize and articulate an information need' I can see a large improvement. To be honest when I first started I probably would not have even had a clear grasp on what this objective even meant. However, that is no longer the case. I now realize the importance of being able to 'recognize' and 'articulate' when it comes to this. I also know that is very important and necessary when it comes to research. I think one of the key things that is important with this point is the ability to articulate, something that is obvious yet many do not understand how to do it properly. Next, 'formulate a research question' is something that I also drastically improved on. When I first started the class I was dumbfounded when it came to coming up with a question. I had a few ideas but none really seemed to be worthy of actually researching. However now with work and thought I can see that I have improved drastically in this field. Being able to see and follow your results is amazing. Next, 'develop and apply appropriate search strategies' is something that I have also made a lot of progress on. I now have a complete grasp of how to conduct a adequate and proper search, where before I was limited to google along with being very vague with my searches. I think that this is one of the most important skills that I developed in the class. Next, 'evaluate strategies and results and revise them as needed.' Not to sound repetitive, but the fact of the matter is that this is something that also needed a lot of improvement at first, however now after much effort I can clearly see results. At first, there would be a lot of confusion and misunderstanding with the different strategies, however no longer as I can filter through the information much better. Another thing that I was completely out of the know before this class was 'how to make effective use of traditional and new library resources and tools.' At first I only knew the basic concepts of the library and would fall back on getting assistance always. However know because of this class I can be a lot more independent in the library with my time and research. Next, 'describe research processes and communicate results.' Because of the lessons and discussions we had in class I am fully able to complete this objective. This actually was never really hard for me but I improved as I went along which of course is a good thing. Lastly, 'understand and apply principles of information ethics.' At first I did not really even know what this meant. However know I have a good understanding of what it refers to (plagiarism etc). This is probably one of the most important things that we learned on many levels, both for our own protection and that of others.
I firmly believe that when I look at my portfolio I can see my progress just by the information within it. If you read through it as it progresses you can see how the person writing it is becoming more aware and smarter on the subject as they progress. When I look back at what I knew when I first entered and compare it to know I almost laugh because I see an entirely differently informed person. I have had (at least I believe) many successes and few failures (if any). To be honest I do not look at anything as a failure, rather a learning experience. I worked on solving them by doing research and asking questions. Then I would take in the information and figure it out. When you realize things on your own you get an even better grasp on the issue. This class helped on many levels, not just issues with the library but issues with the academics of the entire umbrella of college in general. I can safely say that because of this class that I am now prepared to use the library and research on all levels!

1) Many things were discussed in class. We mainly focused on the MLA and APA citation formats and how and when to use them. Also we discussed more about our projects in terms of what was right and what was wrong etc. We know have (in general) a better understanding on citations and our projects, it was helpful.
2) One difference between MLA and APA formatting is that is that MLA has the date at the end and APA has the date near the beginning. Another difference is that MLA underlines the title of the book while APA doesn't underline the title and actually only capitalizes the first word of the title.

ESSAY ON THE RESEARCH
My research topic took me a long time to decide on as I had many different choices and options to sort through. However, after much thought, I eventually came up with the idea/question of, what is the importance and role of physics/engineering when it comes to theme park rides (roller coasters, bumper cars) and their operations? This is a question that both interested and challenged me and I saw it as a great opportunity to apply my newly learned researching skills!
As I began to layout all of my different options and possibilities I wasn't completely sure as to where I wanted to start. After I thought over everything I finally decided to begin my research by starting with Academic search premier. I thought this would be best to start with as it would give me a good idea of where this topic is going to take me and what is in store for the research. Well, I was right, it turned out to be challenging and at the same time rewarding, as with effort, I found what I was looking for. Academic search premier yielded me a few potential pieces of research that I could use to answer my question, but based on the content, I narrowed it down to the main one. Next I decided to use the library catalog because I thought it would be both appropriate and helpful. It turns out that my assumptions were right on. I found a few things but of course after i tried many different combinations and possibilities. The catalog yielded me a book that is in the library that is all about physics and its principles in everyday life, something that is very relevant to my topic.
When it comes to search terms there was a lot of trial and error until I began to use ones that were more proper in terms of yielding results and I could see why. I used a countless amount of them, a lot of them being spin offs and different combinations of previous searches. Some, for example were, "physics of roller coasters," "roller coasters science" "bumper cars physics" "theme park science" etc. The list continues with a lot more but these ended up being the core searches that gave me the best results. I applied a lot of evaluative techniques based on the results that were given to me. On some searches essentially nothing showed up that was decent or usable for my research, but on others I received what I was looking for. This helped me understand what was and was not working with my searching techniques. I analyzed the results and made a conclusion based on them, it was helpful as it gave me a better insight on where to go in the future. I also ended up making a fair amount of adjustments to my searches based on a need for more information and a general lack of usable results. The adjustments that were made were trying different databases with the same search terms, and trying different search terms with different databases, essentially I explored near all possibilities.

Each source yielded me information that I found to be suitable for my question. It shed light on many different things. If you look at the text of this research it really answers my question and then some! Each source had information that was credible and backed up. Some things which I know understand to be critical when it comes to information and sources. I kept the basic bibliography information for each source so I and the reader would have a basic understanding of what it meant, and even more important, I made sure it would be easy to refer back to at a later time (posted above).
A statement that I would write about what I newly learned about my cluster topic would go like this. "Based on one simple question I now have a much greater understanding of how massive and relevant the topic of physics is to our everyday lives."
I would continue my research even further by talking to professionals in the field of physics by having a one on one discussion on my topic. This could help a lot as well as provide a lot of information!
Two complex questions:
1) Could the science (physics) of the roller coaster ever be overcome or canceled out by some sort of force/energy (i.e. Einstein theory's etc)?
2) How can you determine/calculate the specific amount of energy/force needed to overcome obstacles (gravity etc) on the roller coaster?
_Another database that I feel I could use is the Britannica Online database search. I feel that it could give good explanations and definitions of things that could be better clarified relating to my question.
To sum the whole project up I would have to say that this entire project and research went a lot smoother then I anticipated. When I actually put what I learned into action I became more aware of how to properly utilize the knowledge. And to top it all off I learned some interesting and valuable information about my cluster.

NOV 8 BLOG
Hi again! From talking to classmates I found out that for this posting we needed to go to the library and choose a book relating to our question (or something similar). Anyway, I recieved some confusing answers and unfortunately I missed last class due to a family emergency. Anyway as said in my NOV 5 blog I really want to get back on track with the class. In terms of this particular blog would it be possible to schedule some sort of appt. to discuss what I missed (the project) etc?
I just want to be 100% sure with everything, thanks a million! Daniel O'Brien
PS- I am going to send you an email right now just in case, thanks!

Nov 5 BLOG -------------------------late
First off I am regretful about the late posts, there have been a couple family issues that were important---anywho I hope to be back on track!! -Dan
1) Although I was unable to make class (family emergency) I consulted with some classmates about what was discussed in class so now for the most part I am informed! Today in class we discussed how the library codes work and how to use them to find books. The class then searched for books that related to our topic and were sent out into the library to find them. Then, also you discussed the final and how it would be similar to the HW for November 14th.
2) "Words" can include content of the article where as "subject headings" refer to the title and headings of the article.
3) Words give more results because they are less specific for location but can often produce irrelevant results. Subject heading searches generally result in a lower number of results but they are usually more concentrated on the topic.
Thanks again! Dan O'Brien LIBY 1210 ---PS_ I will make efforts to talk to you outside of class to get some more info/input on everything I missed, thanks again!

Lesson 5- I. Research Log Entry (Oct 29, 2007)
1) Many things were discussed in class today but the core concept/topic revolved around determining what types of publications were what (i.e. Professional, consumer, trade etc). We also did some more delving and discussion about the different databases and different methods to use them.
2) Popular journal- This is a more mainstream journal/publication that is more consumer friendly about the topic(s) it discusses.
Trade/professional journal- This type primarily focuses on catering to people whose careers revolve around the specific profession/occupation. They are also focused to markets/companies (business). Essentially their is an exclusive professional focus.
Scholarly journal- This type primarily caters to people within education. For example, some might be topic specific (business, science etc) within education. (And/or an educational background within a particular field)
3) They both have their pros and cons. Print first off, is a hard copy and may seem to be more professional because of the literal print. Print is something that costs money (the publications) whereas a lot of online 'material' is free. The cons of print are that it is somewhat harder to access in certain situations and that you are limited when it comes to the computer with it (copy/pasting etc).
Electronic forms also have a lot of pluses and minuses. They are essentially the opposite of what I wrote about print. They have more computer accessibility on many levels. On the other hand (cons) they may be perceived as less valuable or reliable as they are online (a blog etc, or just preconceived notions about online work).
Essentially they are both good and usable! A lot of the pros/cons are subjective on a case to case basis (at least sometimes I would assume).

II. Research Log Entry (oct 25, 2007)
1) (Topic Sentence)- The role of public speaking in the current job market is extremely critical due to the fact that it is an important skill in order for career success. (Statement of Exploration)- I will discuss all of the reasons and points as to why public speaking is a critical skill to have in the job market.
2) Public Speaking, career communication, job market speaking, job communication, corporate communication, communicating at work, job presentations, career presentations, effective communication to name a few.
3) I think that there are too many to list that could be useful in some way to better and perfect my search. However some of the key ones are:
-Business Source Premier
-Communication and Mass Media Complete
-Linguistics & Language Behaviour Abstracts
As said there are pieces of information that can be derived from many of them but these are some key ones (I believe).

I. Research Log Entry --Oct 22, 2007
1) There were several points discussed in class that were all critical and relevant to understanding the proper uses of databases and searches. In class we had more hands on experience with different hypothetical topics with the different databases. We got more into the meat of how to use all the different databases and which ones are better for different reasons/situations. Also we talked more about what we will be doing in the long run in terms of work/projects --no midterms etc.
2) To me (as said in my other blogs) the main important points revolve around proper use of the different databases. This is critical because it will determine how well we are with a large part of our college career and beyond. This is essentially laying the foundation in many respects. As said, I am still learning a lot by listening in class and trying different things with the databases. I can already see progress!
3) I will make sure to maximize the amount of different searches and combinations within the databases etc. I will also try several different searches in different databases with different settings within the databases. Basically I will not give up as easily so I will spend more time/effort with my search which should yield better results!

II. Research log entry (Oct 18, 2007)
1) My final question was, "What is the importance of having a grasp of public speaking in terms of being able to be a functioning member of society with a respectable career?"
2) I attempted a good number of searches with different combinations of terms. Some of them were, "public speaking relevance," "public communication career," "successful communication," "speaking publicly work," and "communicating (at) work" to name a few. In all honesty they worked to an extent (I am still trying to really get a good grip on successfully utilizing the databases). I found results that were related but few that were directly about the importance of 'how important it is to be a good/bad public speaker in the job market.' I think more revision and understanding will help me yield better results. Or perhaps I am looking in the wrong place?
3) I did need to try alternative terms (listed above). Some worked better then others based on the topic & listing etc. I think it is critical that you try alternative terms in your searches, for if you do not you are potentially limiting yourself and research.
4) I would say my final results were, simply put, okay. My reasoning for this is that based on the results I could draw good conclusions/write an interesting paper etc. However I think that there is room for improvement. I think more then enough is always better then not enough. A good number I would say (I'm new to this) would be around 100.
5) For the most part they all in some form or another answered my question, just some better then others. I honestly think that sometimes it is a bit of a chance/luck. I say this because it is really hit or miss as to whether or not you type in key words that are in the article or publication etc. This is why I said previously that it is better to over search then to under search.
6) They help to refine based on how you structure your search. You can focus on one thing more then another, or completely eliminate something from it. I would say it has a lot of influence and can be used to your advantage if you know how to use it properly. As said I am still learning a lot, but quickly and eagerly!

I. research log entry (Oct 15. 07)
1) Many things were discussed in class today however the main topic was revolving around databases and data collecting, interpreting etc. We learned a lot about the different types and meanings. Also we were made aware of the different databases that the college uses/offers. We practiced searches with them to get a better understanding of them.
2) To me the points that were most important to me were the ones regarding the university databases. I did not know that they existed nor how to use them. I know this is important due to the fact that I know I will have to use them a lot over the course of my college career.
3) I can use the techniques in many different ways, however primarily in my classes and in my research. Also now I can more effectively use the tools because I have a better understanding of just how they work.
4) I think it is one of the best ways to go about a search and I will soon be using it. Everything you need (especially nowadays with the advent of the modern computer) is right at your finger tips. I know that I will have an even better understanding and grasp on it after I get some good in field practice with it.

II. Research Log Entry (Oct 11, 2007) --liby 1210--
1. My first question revolves around my Communication (public speaking) class. My question is, what is the role and importance of public speaking in today's job market?
2. Some of the main intermediate questions that I came up with were:
-Do public speaking skills give an employee or potential employee an advantage in the job market?
-How good must these skills be in order to be sufficient?
-What defines good public speaking skills?
-Who set the standards of what good/bad public speaking skills are?
-Are they right, if so why?
-Based on what did they make their judgments on what is good and bad in terms of public speaking?
My list of questions actually continues but this is a sufficient snapshot of where I went with this topic. The other questions get really off topic. It is actually really interesting to see how much deeper you can go on a subject/question.
3. In the different stages I took a few key approaches. First off I made sure that I was very particular and careful with my thoughts/concepts/research etc. I wanted to ask key questions that were relevant and would better explain my main question. Also, asking these other questions will help me understand more about the topic. For all of them my strategy was the same, ask a critical question and continue off of it with logic. It lead me to what I believed to be good questions.
4. I would say that my final question is complex. It requires a lot of research and quite honestly a large part of the answer is subjective with a fair amount of opinion. I probably could continue further but it delves to deep (I believe).
5. Another question that would help me with my exploration would be:
-Do you need to completely follow the 'rules' to be a good public speaker, or could you potentially be unorthodox with your speaking and still be considered good?
This is one example of another question I could ask. It seems to me (at least on this topic) the answers to the questions will be more subjective and opinionated as I continue to go deeper into questioning. It is really interesting to consider all of these different factors and to eventually see where it will take me!

I. LIBY 1210 (October 8, 07) O'Brien
1. Many things were discussed in class plus we had an interesting and informative activity to ask each other more questions based on the original topic. However the main topic that we discussed had to do with research and researching. We had an in class activity where we had to check 3 different news websites (one national, and two regional) and then compare the different/similar stories and understand why they were such. After finding out the information we then began to understand why the different situations were in the state that they were. Also we did some recap on the previous class topics. Essentially we are delving further into research and its components.
2. For me the points that were most important were revolving around how the stories are generally different based on region and bias. It is very critical to understand this when doing research because it can really throw you off and mislead you.
3. Now in my research I will be very careful when it comes to my sources in terms of regions and bias. Also I will seek out second opinions so I get both sides of the story in order to insure I will be better if not fully informed.
4. I would say consulting others, perhaps in blogs, forums etc. Basically not just relying on a "Google" search. There are many possibilities out there and I feel one should not limit themselves when it comes to their research.
5. I think that their are many ways to improve and grow when it comes to topic development and people should really put a lot into their topic development. It is amazing how much information is out there and it would be a shame to not utilize it to a large degree.

II. Log Entry (Oct 4) LIBY 1210 Daniel O'Brien
1. The question that I tried to answer through using the web was very general and simple. I decided to ask, "When was the television network MTV created and what is some general information on the network?"
2. With my conventional "web" thinking I elected to only use Google as my search engine.
3. I tried 2 different searches, the first being simply "MTV" and the latter being "MTV history."
4. I evaluated that my results were very thorough. I came to this conclusion because the search gave me two main websites to give me all of the information I wanted. The main page being the actual website of MTV (www.mtv.com) and the second web page being the "wikipedia" on MTV. I know that sometimes the credibility of wikipedia is questioned, but I cross checked a fair amount of the information on the wikipedia to the actual MTV website and it checked out to be accurate.
5. I would say to further my searches and get more complex with them. Perhaps search through forums, news articles, video, etc. There are many possibilities.
6. Honestly nothing major in terms of questions. The only minor question lingering in the back of my mind was if I was perhaps missing something.
Thanks, Daniel O'Brien LIBY 1210

I. Research Log Entry
1. Today in class I became aware of many new things courtesy of an informative lesson. However, somethings I was already aware of. Some of which that I was not aware of were wikis, blogs, and URLs.
2. Many things discussed in class were new to me. Things such as the acronym for HTML and HTTP, .mil, server address and sub-directory. I found it to be very interesting because I did not realize how much I did not understand about the World Wide Web!
3. If given an assignment to do research you need to consider a few important elements. The three main ones being the source, the date, and the endings of the URL (i.e. .org). However it is not limited to these.
4. I have many ideas about exploring the web that mostly include learning new things. I think that the web is a great resource when used properly. It can open many doors as well as making things very convenient.
